Progress......a little gimp and three applique flowers added to one piece of work.

A quick show and tell of my progress with this work.
Gingham remains the dominant cloth here.
This table cover is my main focus at the moment.
If you remember, the embroidered gingham is being appliqued to a cut up and pieced vintage table cover.
In these images three pieces of embroidered gingham are completely finished, attached to the surface and edged with bullion and French knots.
One piece is partially edged and the final one is just pinned. I'm hoping to finish the last two this evening.
Last time I was here I spoke about how I couldn't share any work from class.
Today I can give you a glimpse........
This piece will be a table cover, inspired by memories of my nanna Sally and my nanna Beryl.
A table cover created using a vintage table cover as a base, a cut up and re pieced vintage table cover.
The large applique circles are embroidered prior to being attached here and I have a stack more waiting to be finished.
(the lemon applique is for a cloth book but lives well here I think)
The long strip? hand embroidered gingham ribbon for finishing touches.
I can't even calculate the time it takes to embroider this ribbon, I can only say it is a labour of love.
Embroidery is continuing on four inch squares of silk. I do hope you are enjoying this little visual of how my smallest stitched sample books evolve and come together.
There are two new pages here, one with applique and web stitch the other studies of stitch, beads and sequins with a row of Turkey work thrown in!
I'm considering adding labels to the web stitches for colour identification......I'm thinking.

I do enjoy creating these little embroidered hankies. I enjoy doodling pattern on the cloth, no pressure doodling, familiar pattern and then adding little bits of applique and playing with simple stitches. I've yet to decide whether this will be another needle case or another cloth for buttons. I have more need of a button cloth but can you ever have too many needle cases? I doubt it. It's possible these will more and more become my ''cloth'' work over the coming weeks and months whilst I am concentrating on paper in ''artist books''. I won't be able to show you much of my class work initially so you and I will focus more on things like this.......little doodles, soft cloth and simple stitches. Sounds good to me.
The cutwork here, (with the patchwork at it's edge) is from something we are creating in class, it will eventually become a folded pocket, a pouch. The other piece? I was compelled to create the other piece as a result of working on the cutwork pocket. There's something about the Liberty print on white cloth which excited me and I couldn't help myself. As yet I have no idea what the new piece with the hexagons will become. I don't even care. I love to sew, I sewed. It may or may not be added to.....if the urge to mix fabrics and stitch gets hold of you then you just have to go with it.
Applique on this swatch header is now complete...five motifs each created using pleated cloth which has then been embellished with bullion knots and turquoise beads. This is one of four pieces which will be combined to create a sample book of embroidered silk panels joined with stitch to form a reference of stitch and technique ideas for various embroidered items such as panels, bags, pockets, buttons, pillows and toggles.
I am hoping to move this idea on over the coming days by gathering all my loose swatches together and refreshing my memory as to what each piece still needs in terms of embroidery and finishing.
The day before yesterday I showed you the first of these experiments in surface design, my first attempt at kick starting my brain to gather ideas for patterning for use in my next class.
Yesterday I showed you the second piece, the second sample, today the third. I think this one needs flowers.....flowers similar to the ones on the first piece, perhaps upside down flowers depending on where I can fit them in. Watch this space.....
Pieces I create in my new class won't look exactly like these, the patterning will be adapted again. These are purely references for my own use, memory prompts, idea hors d'oeuvres. I have to leave these for a short while now though...I have headers to make for my ongoing swatch book. (a reminder of that is here)
More ''finishing off'' from embroidery school, an edge of oversized Suffolk puffs.
These Suffolk puffs are very soft, created using a lovely soft cotton with padded applique decoration added at one edge. Of course this sample will look different again when it forms part of the swatch book that is yet to be put together. I'm thinking the end of next week, by then I should be able to show you the finished article.
There was a very unexpected response to my post yesterday where I showed work from an old class, sampling for stitch. There was a request for this to be listed again as a ''work on your own'' class which I have now done, you can read about that here.

This piece is finished now in terms of surface embroidery. There is a row of padded applique ''flowers'' along with a row of very tiny Suffolk puffs which took a lot of fiddling but were very definitely worth it. Still to do? Still to stitch? The lining, the sides, hand finish the edges and add a few more titivation's to finish it off.
